square piece of paper (any size, width will be approximately your finished size)
ribbon
|

directions
- Start by folding your paper into accordion pleats. The number of pleats determines the number of points on the ornament (each pleat equals two points).
- Fold the accordion paper up so all pleats are together and the height of the paper is one pleat. Fold paper in half to determine the center, unfold, and staple at the center point.
- Cut a curve or diagonal into each side of the paper from the edge to about halfway to the staple. Make sure the cut is on the same side of the paper so that it forms a wide U or V shape when cut. The outside edges will form the points of the star.
- Fan the sides out so that they meet and attach on the back side with small pieces of tape.
- Punch small holes in the top of the star and thread ribbon through to form your hanger.

directions
Experiment with different lengths of paper to get the size you'd like. Cut a trunk and pairs of short, medium and long branches.
- Curl the branches around a toothpick to get spiral effect.
- Glue branches to trunk, beginning with the longest curl, working up to the smallest.
- In our version, we created a "cap" with another piece of paper and ran fishing line through the cap. You can also take the trunk and turn it over to create a loop at the top and thread ribbon through the loop to hang the ornament.
