The Buzz :: Milwaukee :: Spotlight on Historic Third Ward
Laverne. Shirley. The Fonz. These beloved "Happy Days" characters all made their homes in Milwaukee, but the city itself has since evolved past the folksy, blue-collar kind of town that reruns evoke. Today's Milwaukee is a sophisticated place.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the hip Historic Third Ward. This old warehouse district now boasts dozens of trendy boutiques, gourmet restaurants and luxurious lounges, not to mention the city's highest concentration of galleries. Must-stop shops include Lela, a chic women's clothing store that features a hand-picked mix of designer and consignment duds; Broadway Paper, the best card and paper store in town; and Tory Folliard Gallery, which is celebrating 20 years of great contemporary art.
For food and beverages, head to Coquette Café, which features the French bistro side of Milwaukee's most famous chef James Beard Award-winner Sandy D'Amato. Or graze the goodies at the Milwaukee Public Market and enjoy some bubbly at champagne bar Cuvee. Visit historicthirdward.org. - J.H.
Stationery lovers will be in paper heaven at Milwaukee's Broadway Paper.
